Oxen-Free of Satanic Possessions.

Title: Oxenfree

Initially Released: 15th January 2016

Developer: Night School Studio

Platforms: PC (reviewed) , PS4, Xbox, Mac, Linux? (I can't even be bothered to make a joke about this being used less than macs. (Whoops, I guess I just did))

Well look at this, I think this is actually the newest game I've talked about on here, which is surprising cause I'm normally way too poor to ever actually buy a recent game. Although what I should mention is that I got this in a sale awhile ago and streamed a blind play through. I also then bought a humble bundle that had it on but I gave that to a friend, there is actually a reason I mentioned this but I'll get to that later. When I first saw this game I thought it looked cool but with it's 2D side scroll like gameplay I didn't think it would be scary (This is in the horror category if you were wondering). However, just because a game is classed as a horror doesn't mean it's scary so here is my review of Oxenfree.

Story (Avoiding Spoilers)
Oxenfree follows five friends who go to an island to partake in a massive annual beach party, except, well the party turns out to be not so big as the five friends (Alex, who is the character you play as, Jonas, Clarissa, Nona and Ren). When all the characters are together it is shown who all the characters are. Alex is a girl with a dead brother so brings her new brother to the island, Jonas is Alex's new brother who clearly feels like an outsider to the group, Ren is the stoner friend who thinks too much, best friends with Alex and likes Nona, Clarissa is the popular girl who doesn't like Alex cause she blames her for her brothers death cause Clarissa dated Alex's brother, she's also a bit of a twat, Nona is a girl. So basically Alex takes Jonas into a spooky cave and unleashes stuff. I won't say anymore to avoid spoilers.

Presentation and atmosphere
I have to say I absolutely love the atmosphere in this game, as horror game this is definitely where the spooks start to come into the mix. As soon as you are on the island you can feel a sense of dread just hanging over your shoulder and you constantly feel like something big is about to happen. The game is also impacted by the fact that there is no one else on the island with you; as far as you know. As I mentioned before the style of this game is a side scrolling 2D like game, it also has a kind of cartoon look for the characters but a darker more painted like backgrounds. For me this style works very well because, as I said before, it made me think that the game would not be that scary at all however the atmosphere alone from the areas to just how the game was written made me quickly change my mind.

Gameplay
Oxenfree is a story driven game so it does not exactly have a lot to in terms of gameplay. For the most part you will be walking around talking a lot, or not, and fiddling with a hand radio that allows you to hear special frequencies. This is where all the secrets come in to play; because there are so many things to find in this game. Apart from this this is the only real gameplay because like a said it's a story driven game. Some people might call it a "walking simulator" but sush they're silly.

I don't really want to give spoilers for this game because it is an ending I particular enjoyed and I really think people should experience this for themselves. I also do not want to talk about this ending because there are a few things that people debate about and I don't really want to get into that. Anyhow, this is all, so yeah nothing else left to say. This was quite short wasn't it?

So, how was it for you?
You should totally let me know on my twitter
And did you know I streamed Oxenfree?
But hey if you missed it watch all past streams on YouTube. (unless they're streams where nothing really happens or I'm chilling with music).
Also as a note this was totally meant to come out last month so HOPEFULLY there'll be another something put out this month, not sure what though.
