Dead Space: Ah Childhood Games.
Release: October 14, 2008
Awards: Who Actually Cares?
Platform: PS3, XBOX 360 (Played), PC
I was, lets say, under 10 when Dead Space came out and I played it. Yes, I was scared by it but I was young and dumb remember. Anyway let us get on with it now.
I recently decided to try Dead Space again because I have never actually finished this game before. Is it too scary? Or is it just boring, like most recent horror games? Well... we'll get to that. Dead Space is a 3rd person survival horror game developed by Visceral Games. I could tell you what else they made but honestly it's not that interesting, well they did the MySims series but that’s to be expected. When I look at games like Dead Space I instantly think MySims, do you not? If your answer is "no" then well done you're a rational human being.
Story
NEXT.
SPOILERS BUT THE GAME IS FROM 2008 SO Y'KNOW.
In all seriousness it is quite hard to talk about the story of this game without comparing it to things such as Event Horizon. The story follows a mute white dude who is part of the engineering team who has come to respond to the distress call of the mining ship, the USG Ishimura. When the team arrives to the mining ship they find out the whole crew is dead and something has taken over. In the first scene it is shown that the main characters (Isaac) girlfriend is on the ship, to get us invested? I think, maybe. Basically when the repair team get on the ship they all die except the whiny female, the mute main character and the black guy that everyone is suspicious of. I will say I found all the characters quite boring, however that being said I do think Isaac is better without a voice. I don't want to describe every little thing that happens in this game so I'll just say they try to fix stuff and it goes wrong a lot. I'll just say it now I never actually finished this game I got to the last chapter and just stopped, why? Well I'll tell you!
This game plays like Resident Evil mostly the later ones like Resident Evil 4 with no HUD, the over the shoulder view point and honestly after eleven chapters I honestly got so bored and every chapter was go to this room kill some Necromorphs then move something use the slow time mechanic listen to some boring as shit dialogue that is meant to be plot but honestly I don't care that much, I just wasn't interested. One thing I did like is that there are not really that many cut scenes because you always have control of Isaac and it makes the game feel like more of a cohesive experience rather than the game ripping to controller out of the players hands and smacking you for not being so gosh darn invested in the story. Honestly I did enjoy this game for what it is, the gameplay is solid, the horror is not very scary, the scary moments are just walk past a vent and a Necromorph jumps out. A main part of Dead Spaces combat is that you're meant to shoot off the limbs to stop the enemies which was used for a lot of the marketing campaigns, although the enemies are as attached to their limbs as the cast of Geordie Shore are attached to their dignity, that’s not very much.
Visuals
For being about eight years old the game has aged pretty well in both gameplay and visuals, yeah the graphics are a bit old but I think it still looks decent for what it is, I also quite liked when Isaac sees hallucinations of his girlfriend, it's not scary or anything I just think it's kinda cool. The atmosphere of the game can actually sometimes be quite tense like it should be in a horror game then something just jumps out for a cheap jump scare and it's ruined. This seems to be the games biggest downfall, it has potential, the atmosphere can be cool sometimes but it always leads to the same jump scare with the same loud sound effect.
Outro
I actually like this game for what it is, the horror is mediocre at best, the story and the characters can sometimes be interesting but are quite dull for the most part, the gameplay can be quite clunky but can be enjoyable. Maybe when this game first came out it was more interesting but now it is just alright but I still quite like it but that’s probably just because I played it when I was younger. Also even though I didn’t finish it I can still guess where it was going with the whole scientology plot and Isaac's girlfriend being dead and hey it's not like I actually need to finish this game there's two more after this.
