Event [0] Review

Event [0] Review: Kinda Like Portal But Not Really.
Title: Event [0]
Release: 14th September 2016
Platform: PC (played, Duh)

For a while now, I have been finding myself enjoying more and more narrative driven games. So take this as a warning, if you're the sort of person who says things like, “this so called game” or “this is just another stupid SJW walking simulator.” Well, you can piss off. Entirely. Now that we're left with just the sensible people lets get started:

Start
Event [0], which I'm going to be calling Event 0 cause I can't be fucked to put the brackets, is a game set in space, more specifically on a space station. You, a character you decide the backstory of during text based exposition, are trapped all alone in this space station. However, you are not alone, because you quickly discover the ships only surviving inhabitant, an AI known as: Kaizen-85. When introduced to her she gives you one objective; destroy the drive and then she can get you back to earth. This is where the main gameplay mechanic is shown:

Gameplay
The way this game functions is with the use of terminals, you simply walk to a terminal and you can talk to the AI. Through these terminals you can tell the AI to open doors, Access logs and other such commands. An issue I have with this system is, the whole point of this game is to build a relationship with the AI which affects the multiple outcomes of the story, I believe there are three ending, that's all I've seen anyway. My problem is that a lot of other things have tried this and they all fall short, some more  than others, simply because at the end of the day you're still talking to a computer that has been programmed to respond to specific commands, so unless you use those specific commands the computer tends to get confused and it ruins the whole flow of the game. This is mostly a problem in this game because the AI is meant to be advanced and super amazing awesome smart yet falls over the simplest phrases and words, there are also points in which the computer tries to have a conversation and give some plot and yet gets confused every time you try to respond with an actual reply like an actual person might say, yet you get more out of the AI if you just repeatedly type ‘yes’
There is another positive point to this, however I feel it could be considered a spoiler, so just note this system isn't all bad and does have some good points. Plus, I like how you can type, “FUCK YOU” and Kaizen gets very offended.

Atmosphere/Visuals
There are three narrative focused games that I have played and consider myself a fan of, Gone Home, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter and Event 0. One thing I can say for everything one of these games: They all look beautiful, and all three have an amazing atmosphere, I have talked about Gone Home before and how it's empty house and visuals actually creeped me out more than a most modern horror games and then the story went the complete opposite direction and left me in awe. Where as Vanishing of Ethan Carter had more of an amazing landscape and scenes than Gone Home did, but it also had a great Lovecraftian atmosphere and a great sense of mystery to the whole thing up until the end. Event 0 has both an amazing layer of mystery and unknown creepiness, while also having just beautiful scenes of space while also feeling so empty, which in this context is an amazing thing, cause it's space; space is empty. The last thing I want to mention is the soundtrack, while a little limited, only five songs, it is still an amazing piece of work that of course I bought. To be fair the game is also only two or three hours depending how good with the puzzles you are, so really it fits nicely and doesn't really feel like it's just repeating the same old shit at you. One of my favorite moments in games, in a long time, is when you are floating in space and one of the songs from the soundtrack, either Merge or Hey Judy I can't remember which, just plays and it's truly an jaw dropping, ass clenching, I need to pee but don't want to leave moment.

Summary
I think this game is well worth your time, worth full price? I don't know that's up to you. Even with the problems of the talking to the computer feeling a little clunky sometimes, I still think this is a great game that I did actually finish twice to see two of the endings but then just googled the last one cause I wanted to get this review done. Oh, also the endings are good, they feel complete like an actual ending should and they explain the mysteries and finish the story, like actual endings.

She cannot lie, it’s the end of the world/10
