I Didn't Hate The Ending Of Life Is Strange- One Of Them At Least
Life is Strange is an interactive story game in the same style as a Telltale game, except I liked Life is Strange. I really liked Life is Strange. For those who don't know the story of the game, and don't care about spoilers, Life is Strange follows the story of Max; a hella uncool teen girl who has just returned to her home town to study photography. The game starts with a vision of a colossal tornado heading for the town, why I mentioned this will become evident in a bit, Max then finds out she has powers where she can rewind time; no biggy. After playing around with her power like four or five times she then finishes her lesson and goes to the bathroom where she sees someone get shot, she saves her then later finds out it's her long lost friend Chloe. In my opinion, the entire game is about building up a relationship with Chloe and eventually becoming more than friends. There are obviously other side stories and other characters who you build friendships with, or learn to hate, but I still think the story really revolves around Max and Chloe and everything else feels like side stuff; good side stuff that really does develop a lot of characters and really can make the player emotional and care about this town and the people. Oh, and while I'm doing this spoiler talk about Life is Strange, I just want to say I saw Mr Jefferson and knew he was a complete asshat wanker. There are great points in the game like episode two where Kate tries to kill herself and you have to talk her down and up to this point you've had your rewind to undo any mistakes; at this point the game takes it away and says; any mistakes here are permanent, no rewind, no second tries. Or the episode where you go back and change an entire timeline to then make Chole disabled and she asks you to overdose her and you have to decide whether she lives or dies. It really is a great game that can really make the player feel for these two characters, especially when they also add moments where it's you and Chloe chilling, and it's really sweet. Honestly, with Telltale games I hardly ever really feel for the characters; I'm not invested, I know they'll just die. With Life is Strange, I had hope; just for it to be ripped away, I was invested I really cared about both Max and Chloe. The only other game in this style I cared about as much as this was the Dreamfall/Longest Journey games.
Basically what I am saying is that Life is Strange was well received by a lot of people, also I love it. A massive compliant so many people make when talking about this game is that the ending sucked and I disagree; kind of. There are elements that I do not like about the ending and there are elements I don't mind. I do not like that the end is decided by a choice between two options, though I think that it might be hard to made all your decisions add up to the and choose the ending but then again Silent Hill 2 did it, what really annoys me are the actual choices; well, one of them does.
The end of the game comes after an amazing and trippy dream sequence, and some meh stealth, after you have been bouncing through all different timelines just so that you can actually save yourself and Chloe. Eventually, you end up with Chloe at the lighthouse you keep seeing in your visions, which is out of the way of the storm. Then the choice comes; either just let the town get hit by the storm and leave with Chloe or go back in time to the point where Chloe is in the bathroom and let her die. The one I don't dislike is the first option because, as I mentioned before, the story is about Max and Chloe so to stick together makes sense to me and feels like it is where the story is meant to go. But, to spend the entire game saving Chloe and even at the last point before the choice Max says that she won't let Chloe go, for her to just go 'you know what? Fuck you.' It makes no sense to me. The reason they justify the option of letting Chloe die is that the storm is caused by Max's powers, which can't be confirmed, and that if she goes back and let Chloe die she won't use her power as much and the storm won't come. Well; except she's used them before then- oh, and here's the big point I mentioned before: The game starts, the literal start, is Max seeing the storm. Which would suggest the storm is coming whether or not Chloe lives or dies. That's the point that annoys me the most.
There are other things like how did Max get the time travel power however I don't think that could or even should be explained least it feel like the writer is just pulling something out their ass, lets all pretend that being super gay gives you magical powers, like being vegan.
All in all, I actually loved Life is Strange; I loved the characters, I loved the premise and the setting, that second ending just really annoys me but I think the only reason it really annoys me is because how much I actually care about the story and characters.
Now I just have sit and theorize about the other Life is Strange games coming out, yes I'm one of them now this game has made me that; only for this game though.
I think even if they did have a system where the ending was decided by what you did throughout the game, I would've got the same ending because I was gay. as. fuck.
